Needs Assessment

What are the "gaps" between the current wiki conditions and desired wiki conditions?

What are primary goals with layout? We want to avoid burying info in the site, while also maintaining clear divisions of ideas and “snapshots” of DXARTS.

What are we trying to find out from our users?

    • how the wiki can be utilized to assist instructors with their dialy instruction
    • how the wiki can be utilized to share information and communicate
    • how the wiki can be utilized in class projects
    • how the wiki can be utilized to collaborate on research projects
    • how the wiki can be utilized to assist in the creation of art work
    • how the wiki can be utilized to assist artists in the archival and documentation of their work
    • how the wiki can be utilized as an outreach tool

    What is our target audience?

Graduate students, undergraduate students, administrative staff, IT staff, faculty, and outside viewers (parents, friends, perspective students, artists, others?)

    What accessibility will they need?

    What resources do they have?

What level of technical training will they need?

Sample questions for needs assessment survey:

How much time do you spend documenting your research?

Think of the most difficult art work/research that you've had to document. Describe your difficulties and what would have made it easier.

What would you need to be able to document it? (speak both realistically and otherwise).

Can “see the edges” of these projects by the way it’s organized? are there clear boundaries between works, between works and experiments? is that a good thing?

What language have you developed in your research that may need to be represented in the documentation? For example, if you're making a robotic exoskeleton, how might your documentation be relevant for the people in the Bio Robotics lab on the other side of campus? And how might this language sit with peer artists?

What video file formats would you want the wiki to support?

    • Windows Media Video (.WMV)
    • .3GP (cell phones)
    • .AVI (windows)
    • .MOV (mac)
    • .MP4 (ipod/psp)
    • .MPEG
    • .FLV (adobe flash)
    • .MKV (h.264)

Would you want to utilize the wiki for course page development & maintenance?

Would you want to use the wiki for class projects?
